What is Huginn?

Huginn is a Gmail client for iOS that lets you listen to your emails using on-device text-to-speech. It's designed for when your hands and eyes are busy — commuting, cooking, exercising, or anything else.

Do I need a Google account?

Yes. Huginn connects to your Gmail inbox via the Gmail API using Google Sign-In. Only the permissions needed to read and archive emails are requested.

Is my email data sent to a server?

No. All text-to-speech synthesis happens on your device using Sherpa ONNX. Your email content never leaves your phone for audio generation.

Can I choose different voices?

Yes. You can download multiple TTS voice models and switch between them. You can also assign specific voices to specific senders so you can tell who's talking just by listening.

Does playback continue in the background?

Yes. You can lock your phone or switch apps and playback continues. Queue processing and audio synthesis also run in the background.

How do I manage the playback queue?

Select emails from your inbox and add them to the queue. They play in order like a podcast playlist. You can pause, skip, and resume at any time — including from the lock screen.

Troubleshooting

  • App not working as expected Try restarting the app or updating to the latest version.

  • Audio not playing Check that your device isn't in silent mode and that a TTS voice model is downloaded in settings.

  • Gmail not connecting Make sure you're signed in with a valid Google account and that Huginn has permission to access your Gmail. You can check this in your Google account's security settings.

  • Crashes or bugs Ensure you're on the latest app version. If the issue persists, contact support.
